RBI'S LEADS SETTERS TO SWEEP OVER BENTLEY
BRIARCLIFF, N.Y.- Kayla Nelson (Apple Valley, CA/Granite Hills/University of MD Eastern Shore) (Apple Valley, CA/Granite
Hills/UMES) blasted a walk-off homerun in the opener,
while adding a two-run double in the nightcap as the Setters swept
a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader from the Falcons on Bentley
University. Nelson's walk-off broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom
of the seventh in the opener, while Chelsea Shea's (Babylon, NY/West Babylon)
(Babylon, NY/West Babylon) two-run double in the nightcap
led the Setters to complete the sweep at 6-4. The Setters even
their record at .500 at 21-21 and 9-13 in the NE-10, while the
Falcons fall to 11-17 overall and 8-12 in conference play.
The Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opener with three
runs in the second inning. The Setters rallied in the fifth as
pinch hitter Samantha Poulsen (Bethpage, NY/Plainedge) (Bethpage,
NY/Plainedge) ripped a two-run double to center to slice
the score to 3-2. Three batters later, Larissa Porcelli (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown)
(Yorktown Heights, NY/ Yorktown) hit a single through the
left side to score Michele Forgione (Islip,
NY/Islip), who re-entered for Poulsen tie the game
three.
In the seventh, Nelson blasted her game-winning homerun to left
field to lock up game one for the Setters 4-3. Christina Rescigno (Elmsford, NY/Good Counsel Academy) (Elmsford, NY/Good Counsel Academy) tossed four
innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking two.
Kelly Fisher (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County HS) (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County) came
on in relief, pitching three scoreless innings, allowing two hits
and fanning three to improve to 2-1 on the season.
In the nightcap, Pace got on the board in the first as Porcelli
doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Lauren Bell (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy )
(New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free). Bentley would tie the
score at one in the third but the Setters would rally for two runs
in the fifth inning. Amanda Dague (Houston, TX/Klein Collins) (Houston, TX/Klein
Collins) singled with two outs and Taliza Costanzo (Otisville, NY/Minisink Valley)
(Otisville, NY/Minisink Valley) reached base on a fielding
error. Nelson delivered with a two-run double to left for a 3-1
lead.
Bentley would answer again in the sixth as Lindsay Ayers hit a
game-tying two-run homerun. Pace would rally again in the sixth as
Porcell and Olivia Calcagnini (Yorktown Heights, NY/Siena
College) both walked. Shea would knock in both runs with a
double. Dague would drive in an insurance run with a double to left
field. Shea would allow solo homerun in the seventh but retired the
next batter for a 6-4 victory and twin bill sweep.
On the hill, Shea (7-5) tossed a complete game, allowing four
runs on eight hits, while striking out five. Nelson, Shea and Dague
all contributed on offense, as each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Pace returns to action on Sunday, April 25 when the Setters will
host Stonehill College for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader
on Pace Field on the Briarcliff campus at 12 pm.
