WORCESTER, MASS. –On Saturday, Pace University Softball continued Northeast 10 Conference (NE10) play with a doubleheader against Assumption University at Marois Field. The Blue and Gold dropped a pair of contests, falling 4–3 in the opener before an 8–1 loss in game two. With the results, Softball moved to 12–14 overall and 5–9 in NE10 play.
Game One
Assumption broke through in the third inning with a three-run frame to take a 3–0 lead. The Blue and Gold responded in the fourth, as
Kaylee Matsuda delivered an RBI single to score
Madison Picerno and cut the deficit to 3–1.
Pace continued to chip away in the sixth inning when
Willa Poplawski drove in Picerno with an RBI single to make it 3–2. The Setters completed the comeback push in the seventh, tying the game at 3–3 on a sacrifice fly from
Riley Jenkins.
Assumption answered in the bottom half of the inning, pushing across the go-ahead run to secure the 4–3 victory.
Alyssa Smart went the distance in the circle, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out two in the complete-game effort.
Game Two
Softball fell behind early in the second game, as Assumption scored once in the second and added another in the third to take a 2–0 lead. The Blue and Gold answered in the fourth, with
Willa Poplawski delivering an RBI single to score
Kara King and cut the deficit to 2–1.
The game remained within reach until the sixth inning, when Assumption broke things open with a six-run frame to extend the lead to 8–1. Pace was unable to respond in the final inning as Assumption secured the sweep.
The Setters were limited to two hits in the contest, with King recording a double and Poplawski driving in the lone run. Despite a strong start in the circle, the Blue and Gold could not contain the late surge.
Softball returns home on Tuesday for a non conference doubleheader against Mercy University with the first pitch scheduled for 2pm.
