Box Score WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS IN OPENING ROUND
OF NE-10 TOURNAMENT
#8 SETTERS LOSE TO #9 SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT 64-46
PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The Pace women's basketball team concluded
their 2007-08 season with a 64-46 loss to Southern Connecticut in
the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The
Setters finish their season at 11-17 overall, while the Owls
improve to 15-13 and advance to play at #1 Stonehill College on
Tuesday, March 4 at 7 pm.
Southern Connecticut got on the board early building a 12-5 lead
over the first seven minutes of play as Logan Lentz (Chambersburg,
PA) and Michelle Martinik (Monroe, CT) hit a pair of triples in the
run. The Setters would cut the lead to six as Kristin
Connolly (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) would hit a pair
of free throws at the 12:25 mark and Pace would trail later on in
the half by seven on a lay-up by Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten
Island, NY/St. John Villa) with under six minutes to go in
the half. Southern Connecticut would close out the half with a 13-5
run and take a 34-19 lead into the break.
The Setters would strike first in the second half as Connolly
nailed a trifecta in the first 30 seconds of play to cut the Owl
lead to 12 but that would be as close as Pace got the rest of the
way. Southern Connecticut bulged their lead to as high as 24 points
with 8:23 left in the game and maintained a double digit lead the
rest of the way to advance to the Northeast-10 quarterfinals.
For Pace, Klingele finished with 11 points and five rebounds,
while Lisa Welsome (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's)
joined Klingele in double figures, totaling 11 points and three
steals. Stephanie Rossmy (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten Island, NY/St. John
Villa) grabbed nine rebounds, while Laura Mooney (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa)
(Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) led the team with 10
caroms.
Klingele finishes her career with 1,411 points, good for fifth
on the school scoring list. She is the Setters all-time leader in
three-pointers with 229 and played in the third most games as a
Setter with 119, tying her with four other players. Rossmy ends her
Setter career with 648 points, 489 rebounds and 156 assists, having
her best season in 07-08 as she scored 244 points. Rossmy's 119
games played is tied for ninth in school history. Fellow senior
Maria Cirello (Saddle Brook, NJ/Paramus Catholic) (Saddle Brook, NY/Paramus Catholic)
was a solid contributor her entire four years and ends her time at
Pace as a strong leader on and off the court. Christine
Fitzgerald (San Diego, CA/Mt. Miguel) had a solid two
seasons for the Setters, totaling 155 points and 118 assists in a
Setter uniform.
For Southern Connecticut, Jacqueline Johannes recorded a
double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Rochelle
Johnson totaled eight points and a game-high 14 boards. Kate Lynch
score 13 points, doing most of her scoring at the charity stripe,
hitting nine-of-10, while Martinik chipped in a game-high 15 points
and nine caroms.
The Setters season ends at 11-17, while the Owls move on to the
Northeast-10 Quarterfinals against #1 Stonehill College on Tuesday,
March 4 at 7 pm.
