SHADA TOSSES COMPLETE GAME SHUTOUT IN GAME ONE
HURLEY HITS GAME-WINNING RBI SINGLE IN GAME TWO
BRIARCLIFF, NY - The Pace University softball team took a
Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader from the Yellow
Jackets of American International College, by scores of 4-0 and
3-2. With the wins, the Setters snap a 12-game losing streak,
improving their overall record to 9-15 on the season and 2-8 in the
NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 9-17 overall and 3-5 in
conference play.
Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper)
(5-7) tossed a gem for Pace in the opener as she pitched her
11th complete game of the season and second shutout of
the year, allowing just four hits, while walking three and striking
out nine.
The Setters did all of their damage in the bottom of the fourth.
Kelly Kinyon (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) led
off the inning with a double down the left field line and would
come around to score on Trish Allutto's (Matawan,
NJ/Matawan Regional) RBI single up the middle. Pace would
add three additional runs, all unearned; taking advantage of a pair
of AIC fielding errors that extended the inning. Freshman
Hyra Kameraj (New York, NY/Notre Dame) (New York, NY/Notre Dame) took
advantage of one of the errors, which allowed her to score the
second run of the game. Christina Pane's (Stony Point, NY/Cardinal Spellman) (Stony Point,
NY/Cardinal Spellman) groundball to second allowed
Alton Frisbie (Indian HIlls, CO/Conifer) (Indian Hill, CO/Conifer) to score,
while D.J. Ketchel's (Staten Island, NY/Moore
Catholic) RBI single to left brought home Julia
Hunt (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac).
Taking the loss for the visiting Yellow Jackets was Sara
Swepston (Dallas, PA/Dallas) (5-6), who allowed four runs (one
earned) on six hits, while walking one and striking out a pair.
AIC would take the early lead in game two, scoring a run in the
opening inning. Michelle Franey (Abington, MA/Abington) led off
with a single to left and would come around to score on Teresa
Bonavita's (Agawam, MA/Agawam) RBI double to the gap in left
center. The Yellow Jackets added their second run on the game in
the top of the fifth as Franey's RBI single to left brought home
Jen Gonyea (Springfield, MA/Central), who came in to pinch run for
Tara Gonrec (Southwick, MA/Southwick), who doubled to lead off the
inning.
Pace tied the game at two in the bottom of the sixth on a
two-run single by Hunt that scored Kinyon and Ketchel. The Setters
two-run rally to tie the game set up Patricia Hurley's (Assonet, MA/Apponequet)
(Assonet, MA/Apponequet) game-winning RBI single to center
in the bottom of the seventh that scored Pane.
Shada (6-7) picked up the win in relief, getting a crucial out
as she enticed Katelyn Ellie to fly out to right field, ending the
inning. Kim Troiano (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst)
started the game for Pace, going 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs
on eight hits, while walking four and striking out two
Sara Puglisi (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) (3-7) took the loss for
AIC as she surrendered the winning run. Puglisi pitched 1 1/3
innings of relief, allowing two hits, one walk and striking out
one. Ashley Deegan (Madison, CT/Coginchaug) started the game,
tossing 5 1/3 innings allowing two runs on nine hits, while walking
none and striking out four.
Pace returns to action on tomorrow, Thursday, April
12th, as the Setters host the Panthers of Adelphi
University in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated
for 3:30 p.m. at Pace Field on the Briarcliff campus of Pace
University.
