PLEASANTVILLE, NY- David Qualben (Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) (Brooklyn,
NY/Xavier) stymied the Yellow Jackets of American
International College, holding AIC to two hits over eight
innings while striking out 14. On the day, Qualben allowed
just four base runners, with only one advancing to second, as he
improved to 7-3 on the season.
Qualben also passed teammate Matt Reilly (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) (Denville,
NJ/Morris Knolls) to become Pace's career leader in
strikeouts with 196. Reilly has 189 for his career, and
will start tomorrow against Southern Connecticut State
University. The Setters improve to 33-17 overall and 18-11 in
the Northeast-10 while American International drop to 12-26 overall
and 8-22 in conference play.
Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) had the
Setters' first hit of the game and also scored Pace's first run of
the game in the 1st inning on a fielding error by the
Yellow Jackets' shortstop. The Setters would table four more
runs in the 2nd inning when Matt McNichol (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic)
(Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) doubled down the left
field and was then driven home on a single by Chris Brown
(Kingston, RI/South Kingston). Brown would score on
Brian Hollrah's (Glenwood, MD/Glenely) (Glenwood, MD/Glenely) double to
right center field and Matt Arburr's (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol, CT/Bristol
Eastern) double down the left field line would score
Hollrah and JC Pullum (White Plains,
NY/Valhalla).
In the 5th, McNichol would hit his 3rd
double of the day and would once again be driven by Brown's single
to left field. Pace would tack on a pair of runs in the
6th when Arubrr drove in Hollrah and Mike Pahira (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel)
(Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) would drive home Cawley with a
sacrifice fly to left field. Pahira would pick up another RBI
with a single to the left side of the infield that would score
Joe Barracato (Westbury, NY/Clarke) (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke).
Adam Harwood (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood) (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood) would
score the final run of the game after McNichol was hit by a pitch,
advancing all runners.
Qualben was cruising for most of the game, as he struck out
seven of the first 11 batters he faced. Qualben would retire nine
consecutive batter during that span, covering the 2nd
through 4th inning. Of the last 11 batters he faced,
Qualben struck out six. His 14 strikeout performance matches
the Setters team-, season-high which was also set by Qualben
against UMass Lowell on April 28th. Earl
Oakes (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) pitched the
9th, striking out two batters. The 16 strikeouts
in the game where the most by Pace this season in one game.
At the plate, Hollrah was 3-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI and
two runs scored. McNichol was 3-for-4 with three doubles with an
RBI and two runs scored. Arburr was 2-for-5 with three RBI
while Brown also drove in two runs in a 2-for-5 day.
For AIC, David Dest (Orange, CT) and Jeff Rustico (Plantsville,
CT) had AIC's only hits of the day. On the mound, Terry Loh
(Milford, CT) took the loss after allowing six runs - five earned -
on 10 hits over five innings. Loh walked two and struck out
five. Patrick Salmon (Worcester, MA) gave up two runs on four
hits over two innings while Jon Ferry (Thorndike, MA) gave up two
runs - one earned- on four hits in the 8th inning.
Pace returns to action when they host Southern Connecticut State
University on Monday, May 8th at 3:00 p.m. in a
Northeast-10 Conference showdown at Finnerty Field on the
Pleasantville campus of Pace University.
