Box Score SETTERS COME BACK TO BEAT BENTLEY, 8-7,
IN 12 INNINGS
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace University baseball team came back
from a 7-0 deficit to defeat Bentley College, 8-7, in 12 innings in
a Northeast-10 Conference showdown at Finnerty Field on the
Pleasantville campus of Pace University. The win is Pace's
20th of the year as they go to 20-9 overall and 7-3 in
the NE-10. With the loss, Bentley drops to 13-12 overall and
7-7 in conference play.
Bentley scored twice in the first inning when Steve Gath (Reading,
MA) singled home Bill Dacier (Medway, MA). Chad Mastin
(Newmarket, NH) would follow with a double down the leftfield line,
scoring Gath and putting Bentley on top, 2-0. Bentley would
tack on two more runs in the 2nd and 3rd
inning to give them a 4-0 lead heading into the 4th.
In the 4th, GJ Vicente (Salem, NH) started the inning
off with a single up the middle. Tim Denehy (Norwood, MA)
singled down the leftfield line, moving Vicente to second.
Dacier then came up with a single to left field, scoring Vicente
and moving Denehy to third. After Kevin Vona (Belmont, MA)
popped out, Gath came through with a two out basehit, scoring
Denehy. Mastin then drove in Dacier with a single to give Bentley a
7-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) (Trumbull,
CT/Trumbull) singled through the right side of the infield and Jack
Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) followed with a single. After Cawley
was picked off of first by the catcher, Matt Arburr (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol,
CT/Bristol Eastern) singled to center field, scoring Liscinsky from
second base while advancing to second on the throw. After
Arburr moved to third on a passed ball and Mike Pahira (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) (Holmdel,
NJ) flew out to shallow left field, Matt Castellano (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph) (Staten Island,
NY/St. Joseph) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop,
allowing Arburr to score and cutting the Bentlet lead to 7-2.
In the 5th, Brian Hollrah (Glenwood, MD/Glenely) (Glenwood, MD/Glenely) walked
to lead off the inning and Joe Barracato (Westbury, NY/Clarke) (Westbury, NY/Clarke)
followed with a single. JC Pullum (White Plains, NY/Valhalla) (White Plains, NY/Valhalla)
dropped down a perfect bunt to load the bases. Liscinsky then
followed Pullum by grounding into a double play, but allowing
Hollrah to score and cut the Bentley lead to 7-3. Chris Brown
(West Kingston, RI/South Kingstown) was then the recipient of a
lucky bounce that sent a routine groundball over the head of the
shortstop an into left field, scoring Barracato and making the
score, 7-4.
In the 7th, Pullum came up with a two out double to
right centerfield and was then driven home by a double from
Liscinsky to cut the Falcons' lead to 7-5. Brown would then
single up the middle, scoring Liscinsky and pulling Pace to within
one run at 7-6.
In the 9th, Hollrah was hit by a pitch to lead off the
inning and was then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Barracato. Pullum then hit a routine ground ball to short,
which was misplayed and then thrown away, allowing Hollrah to score
and tie the game at 7-7.
The score would remain tied until the bottom of the 12th
inning when Liscinksy singled with one out. Liscinsky would
move into scoring position when Brown's groundball to short was
misplayed. Arburr then followed with a towering drive to the
left field warning track that bounced over for a ground rule
double, scoring Liscinsky with the winning run.
At the plate, Liscinsky and Arburr each collected three hits and
drove in two runs, while Liscinsky scored three himself.
Brown was 2-for-4 in the game with two runs-batted-in while Pullum
was 2-for-6 and Hollrah scored two runs. On the mound, Earl
Oakes (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) pitched 4 1/3 perfect innings,
facing the minimum down the stretch while striking out three to
pick up his first win of the year. For Bentley, Jarrod
Marchesi (Peabody, MA) was the hard luck loser after giving up two
unearned runs while scattering five hits over 4 2/3.
Pace returns to action when they travel to Garden City, NY to take
on the Panthers of Adelphi University in a non-conference match-up
slated for a 1:00 p.m. start. Pace returns home on Saturday,
April 15th to host the Skyhawks of Stonehill College for
a 12:00 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Finnerty Field
on the Pleasantville campus of Pace University.
