SETTERS COME BACK TO BEAT BENTLEY, 8-7, IN 12 INNINGS

PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace University baseball team came back from a 7-0 deficit to defeat Bentley College, 8-7, in 12 innings in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown at Finnerty Field on the Pleasantville campus of Pace University.  The win is Pace's 20th of the year as they go to 20-9 overall and 7-3 in the NE-10.  With the loss, Bentley drops to 13-12 overall and 7-7 in conference play.

Bentley scored twice in the first inning when Steve Gath (Reading, MA) singled home Bill Dacier (Medway, MA).  Chad Mastin (Newmarket, NH) would follow with a double down the leftfield line, scoring Gath and putting Bentley on top, 2-0.  Bentley would tack on two more runs in the 2nd and 3rd inning to give them a 4-0 lead heading into the 4th.

In the 4th, GJ Vicente (Salem, NH) started the inning off with a single up the middle.  Tim Denehy (Norwood, MA) singled down the leftfield line, moving Vicente to second.  Dacier then came up with a single to left field, scoring Vicente and moving Denehy to third.  After Kevin Vona (Belmont, MA) popped out, Gath came through with a two out basehit, scoring Denehy. Mastin then drove in Dacier with a single to give Bentley a 7-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) singled through the right side of the infield and Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) followed with a single. After Cawley was picked off of first by the catcher, Matt Arburr (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) singled to center field, scoring Liscinsky from second base while advancing to second on the throw.  After Arburr moved to third on a passed ball and Mike Pahira (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) (Holmdel, NJ) flew out to shallow left field, Matt Castellano (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph) (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, allowing Arburr to score and cutting the Bentlet lead to 7-2.

In the 5th, Brian Hollrah (Glenwood, MD/Glenely) (Glenwood, MD/Glenely) walked to lead off the inning and Joe Barracato (Westbury, NY/Clarke) (Westbury, NY/Clarke) followed with a single.  JC Pullum (White Plains, NY/Valhalla) (White Plains, NY/Valhalla) dropped down a perfect bunt to load the bases.  Liscinsky then followed Pullum by grounding into a double play, but allowing Hollrah to score and cut the Bentley lead to 7-3.  Chris Brown (West Kingston, RI/South Kingstown) was then the recipient of a lucky bounce that sent a routine groundball over the head of the shortstop an into left field, scoring Barracato and making the score, 7-4.

In the 7th, Pullum came up with a two out double to right centerfield and was then driven home by a double from Liscinsky to cut the Falcons' lead to 7-5.  Brown would then single up the middle, scoring Liscinsky and pulling Pace to within one run at 7-6.

In the 9th, Hollrah was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and was then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Barracato.  Pullum then hit a routine ground ball to short, which was misplayed and then thrown away, allowing Hollrah to score and tie the game at 7-7.

The score would remain tied until the bottom of the 12th inning when Liscinksy singled with one out.  Liscinsky would move into scoring position when Brown's groundball to short was misplayed.  Arburr then followed with a towering drive to the left field warning track that bounced over for a ground rule double, scoring Liscinsky with the winning run.

At the plate, Liscinsky and Arburr each collected three hits and drove in two runs, while Liscinsky scored three himself.  Brown was 2-for-4 in the game with two runs-batted-in while Pullum was 2-for-6 and Hollrah scored two runs.  On the mound, Earl Oakes (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) pitched 4 1/3 perfect innings, facing the minimum down the stretch while striking out three to pick up his first win of the year.  For Bentley, Jarrod Marchesi (Peabody, MA) was the hard luck loser after giving up two unearned runs while scattering five hits over 4 2/3.

Pace returns to action when they travel to Garden City, NY to take on the Panthers of Adelphi University in a non-conference match-up slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.  Pace returns home on Saturday, April 15th to host the Skyhawks of Stonehill College for a 12:00 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Finnerty Field on the Pleasantville campus of Pace University.
