PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – No. 9 Pace University Men's Lacrosse battled throughout Tuesday night but came up short against top-ranked No. 1 Adelphi University, falling 10-7 at Northwell Stadium. The Setters built an early lead and twice pulled even in the third quarter before Adelphi answered each push, moving Pace to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the Northeast 10 Conference (NE10).
Adelphi opened the scoring less than a minute into the contest, but the Setters answered quickly.
Will Danowski tied the game with 13:14 left in the opening quarter off an assist from
Zach Goetze before Danowski struck again with just seven seconds remaining in the frame to give Pace a 2-1 lead after one.
The Panthers responded with four goals in the second quarter to take control. Adelphi scored three times during the stretch, helping build a 5-2 advantage over the Setters before Goetze cut the deficit to 5-3 with 3:13 remaining in the half.
Pace came out strong after halftime, scoring twice in the opening two minutes of the third quarter.
Trevor Lamoureux opened the half with an unassisted goal before
Matt Baldino tied the game at 5-5 off an assist from
Declan Landers.
Adelphi responded again with three of the next four goals, though Baldino kept the Setters within striking distance with his second goal of the game to cut the deficit to 7-6 late in the third. The Panthers added another goal in the closing seconds of the quarter to carry an 8-6 lead into the fourth.
The Panthers extended the lead to 9-6 early in the fourth before Baldino completed his hat trick on a man-up goal with 9:44 remaining to trim the deficit back to two. Pace generated several opportunities down the stretch, including multiple extra-man possessions, but could not get any closer before Adelphi added an insurance goal in the final minute.
Baldino led the Setters withthree goals, while Danowski totaled two goals and two assists. Goetze added a goal and an assist, and
Jack Kern finished with 12 saves in net.
The Setters return to the road on Saturday for their regular-season finale against No. 3 Saint Anselm College, with the opening faceoff scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
