DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Pace University Baseball completed a four-game weekend sweep of Mercy University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field, earning a 6–4 win in game one and a 5–4 victory in the seven-inning finale. After taking both games of Friday's home-opening doubleheader in Pleasantville, the Setters finished the series unbeaten against the Mavericks to move to 4–4 overall.
Game One
The Setters broke through in the fourth inning when
Benjamin Tullo lifted a sacrifice fly to score
Nick Carlucci for a 1–0 lead. Pace added another run in the fifth as
Rocco Cimino scored on a fielder's choice by
Anthony Depetro, extending the advantage to 2–0.
Mercy responded with three runs across the fifth and sixth innings to take a 3–2 lead, but the Blue and Gold answered in the seventh when
Brayden Sweppenhiser delivered an RBI single to tie the game. Pace seized control in the eighth inning as
Cristian Rodriguez lined a two-run single and Cimino added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 6–3. Mercy added one in the bottom half, but the Setters held on for the win.
Manny Carreras led Pace with three hits, while Rodriguez drove in two runs.
Brendan McCann earned the win with three innings of relief.
Game Two
Pace jumped in front early when
Anthony Depetro doubled home
Brayden Sweppenhiser in the first inning. Mercy answered with three runs in the bottom half before the Setters tied the game in the second on a two-run double from
George Provel.
The teams traded runs before Pace broke through in the seventh. Sweppenhiser reached base and came around to score when
Manny Carreras reached on an error, giving the Setters the decisive 5–4 advantage. The Blue and Gold pitching staff closed the door in the bottom half to secure the victory and complete the sweep.
Depetro led the offense with a 4-for-4 performance and two RBIs, while Sweppenhiser scored three runs in the win.
Pace returns to action on Tuesday at home to face Dominican University N.Y. with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
