Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Fourth Quarter Rally Secures #2 Setters NCAA Victory Over #3 Dominican (N.Y.)

PLEASANTVILLE, NY - #2 Pace Women's Lacrosse hosted the NCAA First and Second Round of the postseason tournament and entered their Saturday afternoon with a match-up with #3 Dominican (N.Y.) University for the Second Round event.

A massive six-goal rally in the fourth quarter allowed the Blue and Gold to feature a comeback for the 16-13 win to advance to the Quarterfinals next Saturday, May 17th.

The Setters only tallied five goals in the first half of play while the Chargers commanded the field with eight, but the cards played in favor of the hosts in the final half with 11 goals compared to the Chargers' five for the win.

Here's What Happened:
  • The Chargers posted the first goal of the contest and maintained that advantage throughout the rest of the half. Gigi Genovese caged a goal in a consecutive fashion for the 2-1 lead, but that would be the Blue and Gold's final upper hand until the fourth stanza. Dominican ended the opening frame with two unanswered goals for the 3-2 lead.
  • With five goals in the second quarter, the Chargers propelled themselves to their largest scoring feat of the day as they held an 8-5 advantage at the half.
  • Nikki Mottes ignited the third with her first goal of the game in a way to shift momentum in favor of the Setters, 9-6. The senior was backed by Marissa Doty (2), Laura Luikart, and Annie Sheehan to trail the Chargers by two, 12-10, with one final frame remaining.
  • Not only did the Setter offense kick into gear, but the defense locked down the Chargers and only allowed one goal in the entire fourth quarter while they went on to cage six. Rookie goalie, Elsa Branco, made two critical saves at the beginning of the fourth that aided in the Setters maintaining their momentum to eventually equalize the score at 12.
  • From the Setter's 10th goal of the game, which occurred in the third, the hosts would cage five unanswered goals until the Chargers used their man-up opportunity to their advantage, 16-13. The fourth quarter saw goals from Maddie Schubert (3), Mary Kate Nawrocki, Lisa Heffernan, and Mottes. As time dwindled down, no other player on either side found the back of the net, and the Setters stayed alive and advanced in the NCAA Tournament.
Box Score Insights:
  • Mottes led the day with six points on two goals and four assists, while Schubert and Genovese caged three goals apiece. Schubert also added an assist to her stat line for four points total in the day.
  • Marissa Doty tallied two goals and one draw control, and Sasha Kulo dominated in the draws with 14 for a consecutive game with double-digit draws.
  • Branco captured 10 saves on the day for her third win in the cage this season and her first NCAA Tournament win.
