#9 Women’s Lacrosse Finalize Regular Season in a Comeback Fashion Over Hawks

PLEASANTVILLE, NY - #9 Women's Lacrosse hosted Saint Anselm College at Northwell Stadium Wednesday evening to cap off their regular season schedule.

After the first Setter goal of the night, the squad ended up battling back from a four goal deficit to come out victorious with the 17-11 Northeast-10 (NE10) victory after an impressive fourth quarter. With the win, the Blue and Gold are crowned tri-regular season champions with New Haven and Adelphi as they end their regular season with a 14-3 overall record and 9-1 NE10 record.

Here's What Happened:
  • The Hawks fended off the Setters in the first half of play after holding the hosts to a single goal in the opening stanza and four in the second. During the second quarter, the Blue and Gold cut into the opposer lead and equalized the score at three on goals from Mackenzie Carita and Maddie Schubert.
  • After the fourth Setter goal, the Hawks went on a rally and caged three to shut down the offensive momentum of the Setters and entered intermission with a 8-5 score favoring the Hawks.
  • The second half overall bled Blue and Gold. The team caged 12 of their 17 goals in the half and posted eight of them in the final frame for the win. The Hawks didn't immediately bail out on their lead as they opened the third quarter with another goal for the 9-5 advantage. Abigail O'Connor tallied her second of the game and Laura Luikart and Mottes followed suit for two more unanswered goals to sit within one, 9-8. With the Setters in a man-up situation, Schubert equalized the score once more at nine, but the Hawks had the answer this time for the 10-9 feature into the final stanza.
  • Once Saint Anselm found the back of the net to kick off the fourth, it would be their final scoring feat of the night. Luikart (3), Carita (2), Gigi Genovese (2), and Marissa Doty (1) led the squad to their comeback victory with consecutive goals, 17-11.
Box Score Insights:
  • Luikart led all scorers with four goals and Mottes led in points with six on two goals and four assists.
  • Genovese ended with five points from three goals and two helpers and Carita had three goals and one assist.
  • Sasha Kulo maintained a dominant presence in the draws with 14.
  • Samantha Tanguay accomplished the win with four saves. Elsa Branco made a swift appearance and recorded a save of her own.
