Extra Inning Rally Guides No. 22 Softball to 22nd Consecutive Win Versus Assumption

WORCESTER, MA. – With a two-run eighth inning in game two of Tuesday doubleheader, the No. 22 ranked Pace softball team managed to increase their win streak to 22 games in a row against Assumption University. The road sweep continues to push the Setters to new heights as they now boast one of the longest winning streaks in NCAA Division II softball this year.

With 3-0 and 4-2 victories on Tuesday afternoon, Pace improves to an outstanding 28-8 overall and an undefeated 12-0 in the Northeast-10 (NE10).

Game One
  • The Setters gained control of game one behind an RBI double from Willa Poplawski in the top half of the first. Jumping out to a 1-0 lead, the Blue and Gold welcomed the NE10 Pitcher of the Week, Gisselle Garcia, to the circle, where she retired seven of the first ten batters on strikes.
  • Following an errant play from the Greyhounds defense, the Setters put another run on the board, making the score 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third. As Garcia continued to have her way in the circle, Assumption totaled a mere two base-runners through five innings of play.
  • In the sixth, a third run crossed the plate for the Setters as Raelle Gorman shot a single to left field to bring home Poplawski. With a 3-0 lead, Garcia returned to the circle, where she put away the Greyhounds. Concluding her outing with back-to-back strikeouts, Garcia led Pace to a 3-0 victory on the road for their 21st consecutive win.
Game Two (8 innings)
  • The weather extended Pace's stay in Worcester, MA., as an almost two-hour lightning delay put game two on hold in the top of the third. As play resumed, the Setters were faced with a two-run deficit after some early errors led to an advantage for the home squad.
  • Later on, in the top of the fifth, Pace had an opportunity to even up the score with two runners on and one out. Alexa Borino eventually delivered a single to bring home the first and second runs of the game for Pace, bringing the score to a 2-2 tie.
  • With neither side finding success late, seven innings were not enough as the Setters and Greyhounds moved the extra innings all square at two runs apiece.
  • With a leadoff single from Kaylee Matsuda, Pace had a chance to swipe the lead from Assumption in extra innings. Following a fielder's choice, back-to-back base-knocks from Poplawski and Madison Picerno put the Setters on top 4-2 in the extra-inning affair.
  • Their two-run inning helped secure game two as Garcia found her way into a save situation in the circle, where she closed out the contest. Wrapping up the doubleheader with a strikeout, the Setters earned the 4-2 victory in eight innings for their 22nd straight win on the diamond.
Box Score Insights
  • Garcia was dominant in the circle one again, posting her 14th win of the year in game one (11th shutout) and her sixth save in game two. On the day, the senior recorded 15 strikeouts, 10.0 innings pitched, and only two hits allowed.
  • Pricilla Del Toro and Alyssa Smart combined for 5.0 innings pitched, one strikeout, and one earned run in the second game of the double bill.
  • In the batter's box, Poplawski had a productive afternoon with three hits, two runs, and two RBIs. Alongside the junior, Borino tallied two hits and two RBIs, which included the game-tying base-knock in game two.
  • Overall, the Blue and Gold out-hit their opponents 11 to 3.
Up Next (The University of New Haven)
