Franco’s Epic Walk-Off Helps Setters Split Doubleheader against Assumption

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – On Sunday afternoon, Pace baseball hosted the Greyhounds of Assumption University for a Northeast-10 (NE10) Conference doubleheader. In the twin-bill meeting with Assumption, the Setters captured game one, 4-1, before dropping game two, 6-5.

With one game remaining in their seven-game homestand, the Blue and Gold take a 10-10 overall record (3-4 NE10) into their next match-up on Wednesday.

Game One (13 innings)
  • The Greyhounds tallied the first run in the second inning as pitching dominated the opening game of the day. In the bottom of the fifth, the Blue and Gold evened up the score, 1-1, behind an RBI single from Luke Rivara.
  • Both pitching staffs cruised on the mound and the 1-1 tie continued into the final inning.
  • In a marathon of a game one, nine innings could not decide a winner as extras ensued at Peter X. Finnerty field.
  • In the tenth, 11th, and 12th innings both sides had opportunities to score but runs were kept off the board as the tie was pushed into the 13th inning. Three strikeouts from Eric Santaella held the Greyhounds at one run with Pace's bats returning to the batter's box.
  • Following a leadoff walk, Andrew Heppner stepped up to the plate in hopes of delivering the game-winning hit. However, the freshman was denied his chance as the Greyhounds awarded him first base with an intentional walk.
  • With two runners on in the bottom half of the 13th, Matthew Franco was presented with a moment to show off his hitting skills to the home crowd in Pleasantville, N.Y. The senior outfielder came up clutch for the Setters putting an end to the game with a long home run to left field. When Franco touched home plate the Setters were victorious, 5-2, after a 13-inning battle.
Game Two (7 innings)
  • In game two of the twin-bill, the Setters held a 4-2 advantage after three innings of play. Runs batted in by Mason Baronian, Luke Rivara, and Anthony Labita put Pace ahead in the early portion of the seven-inning affair.
  • Despite the early lead, the Greyhounds chipped away to bring a 5-3 score into the final inning of the contest. Regardless of several opportunities to put the road team away, the Setters allowed three runs in the top of the seventh surrendering the lead to Assumption 6-5.
  • In the bottom half of the seventh, the Blue and Gold failed to bring a run across leading to a 6-5 loss in game two and a doubleheader split with their in-conference opponent.
Box Score Insights
  • Luke Rivara had the most productive day at the dish for the Setters going 5-for-8 with three RBIs and a stolen base.
  • Franco's clutch home run helped him finish the day 2-for-6 with two walks and three RBIs.
  • On the mound, the trio of Vincent Civitella (6.0 IP, 6K's), Justin Dressler (6.0 IP, 6K's), and Santaella (1W, 1.0 IP, 3K's) helped the Setters claim game one. In game two, Ryan Degnan led the pitching staff with 5.0 innings pitched, three strikeouts, and only three hits allowed.
Up Next (Queens College)
With Sunday's action in the books, the Setters now prepare for their next opponent, Queens College, as they meet the Knights on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. from Peter X. Finnerty Field.
