PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pace baseball opened up Northeast-10 Conference competition on Friday with a three-game series against Adelphi University. In the first contest of the weekend, set versus the Panthers, the Blue and Gold fell on the road 6-4.
With Friday's action in the books, the Setters take a 5-7 overall record into game two of the series as they return to Peter X. Finnerty Field tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch against the Panthers.
Here's What Happened
- Adelphi had their way in the early part of the game as the pitching staff kept Pace in check, while their offense tacked on two runs before the end of the third.
- Strikeouts got the best of the Setters lineup until a Josh Miller single in the fifth broke open the scoring, leading to a 2-1 score.
- However, the Panthers pulled away with a four-run inning to extend their lead to 6-1 after five innings. Heading into the sixth, Pace was in need of a rally to cut into the road deficit.
- Dominic Rivara responded with a solo home run in the next inning to trim Adelphi's lead to four runs, 6-2. Following two scoreless innings, the Blue and Gold had one final opportunity in the ninth to put runs on the board.
- A leadoff single from Andrew Heppner brought life to the Setters dugout, and with no outs in the inning, there was a chance to strike at the plate. An error opened the door for an RBI from Cole Resetar, which marked the third run in the books for Pace.
- Brayden Sweppenhiser knocked a single through the left side in the next at-bat, and with two outs in the ninth, the Setters had the tying run in the batter's box.
- Despite the late push, a groundball would put an end to the contest, with Adelphi claiming the first win of the series by a final score of 6-4.
