PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Tuesday evening, fans at the Goldstein Fitness Center were treated to a stellar performance between No. 18 Pace men's basketball and Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU). Both sides battled back and forth until the Blue and Gold eventually came away with a 75-71 victory in front of their home crowd.
The Northeast-10 win helps the Setters improve to 18-3 overall, and 10-3 in the conference.
Here's What Happened
- In the first half, the Setters showcased their all-around skills taking a ten-point lead towards the end of the period, 32-22. It seemed as though the home squad would dominate the rest of the way, but SCSU kept their opponents in check closing out on a 9-3 run to slice into Pace's lead, 35-31.
- Coming out of the intermission, the Setters thrived with a 10-3 opening run putting them ahead by 11 points, 45-34. The game of runs continued as the Owls crawled their way back into the game with a 9-0 rally making it, 47-46, with Pace leading.
- Both sides continued to swap field goals with the second half staying within four points until the closing minute. In the tight-knit game, the Setters and Owls found themselves all square at 68 points with under two minutes remaining.
- With 1:08 left on the clock, the Owls had a chance to even up the score after two Tray Alexander makes at the free throw line. However, the Freeport, N.Y. native had other plans swiping the ball from SCSU to set up a downtown make from Trey Boyd III.
- The outstanding three-point field goal increased Pace's lead to 75-68 which was enough to hold off the charging Owls. When the clock struck zero the Setters remained atop the Owls winning 75-71.
Box Score Insights
- Boyd III shined for the Setters once again as the sophomore guard tallied a team-high 18 points (4 3PT) with four rebounds and two steals.
- The trio of Jabari Nurse (13 points), Jaden Kealey (13 points), and Alexander (15 points) rounded out the rest of the top scorers for the Blue and Gold.
- Jamaal Waters contributed greatly off the bench posting eight points, and seven rebounds.
- Efficient shooting aided the Setters in their victory as the team made 46.7% (7-15) of their threes and 88.9% (24-27) of their free throws.
