PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – On the road in Manchester, NH.. the Pace University softball team split their doubleheader with Saint Anselm College. The Blue and Gold cruised in game one, 7-1, and dropped game two, 6-1. With the final doubleheader set for tomorrow, Pace sits at 31-12 overall, and 14-6 within the Northeast-10.
Game One
The Setters took advantage of a six-run outburst in the top of the third inning to solidify their game-one victory. After surrendering the opening run of the game to Saint Anselm in the second Pace got to work in the third.
Alexa Borino batted in the first run for Pace with a single through the left side. Two batters later, Riley Jenkins brought another run across home plate off a single up the middle.
Willa Poplawski then broke the game open with her two-RBI triple into the right-field gap to bring the score to 4-1 with Pace ahead. Katerina Luna finished the rally with a searing double to right field to score two more increasing the Setters's lead to 6-1. The Blue and Gold tallied all six runs in the inning with two outs. In the remaining four innings, the Setters added one more run and shut down Saint Anselm at the plate to secure their 31st win of the season.
Gisselle Garcia earned her 18th win in the circle as she pitched a complete game allowing one run off four hits while retiring 15 batters on strikes. Her outing marks the second time this year that she has reached 15 strikeouts or more in a game.
Four different batters produced two hits in the contest. Poplawski (1-for-4) and Luna (2-for-4) each posted two RBIs in the match-up. Jenkins (2-for-3, 1 RBI) Carolina Iturriaga (2-for-3, 1 run) and Sophie Valle (2-for-2, 1 RBI) also had efficient games in the batter's box.
Game Two
The Hawks jumped ahead of Pace early with three runs in the first two innings. Pace's bats were kept quiet as Hallie Hicks presented a difficult challenge for the visiting Setters. Following another two-run inning from Saint Anselm in the bottom half of the fifth, Pace fell behind 4-0.
In the top of the sixth Pace tallied their lone run of the contest with a sacrifice fly out from Raelle Gorman. Although the deficit was trimmed to four runs, the Setters failed to bring any runs across in the final inning as Saint Anselm wrapped up game two 6-1.
Hicks earned the win for the Hawks as she pitched a complete game surrendering one run while striking out nine batters. Audrey Arsen and Sam Wiberg each recorded two RBIs.
In their last ten games, the Setters boast an impressive 8-2 record and will look to finish their season on a strong note tomorrow afternoon.
