Garcia’s No-Hitter Propels Setters to Sweep of New Haven

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Gisselle Garcia's fourth no-hit performance of the 2024 season helped lift the Pace University softball team over the University of New Haven as the Setters took game one, 2-0, and game two 8-0. Following the doubleheader sweep, the Blue and Gold move to 27-10 overall, and 12-4 in the Northeast-10.

Game One

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Setters needed just two runs to fend off New Haven as Garcia dominated in the circle. A sacrifice fly by Carolina Iturriaga pushed Pace ahead early in the second inning, 1-0.

After the score in the second, runs stayed off the board until the sixth as Garcia successfully managed her way through New Haven's lineup. The junior cruised through the opposition tallying 17 total strikeouts in the contest in a dominating effort.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Riley Jenkins launched a solo home run over the center field wall to increase Pace's lead to 2-0. With the extra insurance run, Garcia struck out two of the final three batters she faced to put the finishing touches on Pace's 2-0 victory.

Garcia threw her fourth no-hitter of the year while tying her personal best in strikeouts in a single game with 17. Currently, Garcia ranks sixth in the nation for strikeouts per seven innings with 11.0.

Willa Poplawski and Jenkins lead the way with two hits apiece while Kaylee Matsuda and Alexa Borino added one.

Game Two (6 innings)

In game two, Pace's offense outmatched New Haven, scoring eight runs in a shutout performance. After a scoreless first inning, the Setters jump-started their productive game two with an RBI single from Sophie Valle.

The Blue and Gold did not stop at one as they continued their scoring onslaught in the next inning with a Jenkins single up the middle to bring the lead to, 2-0. In the fourth, Borino doubled to right center field to drive in two more runs for Pace, bringing the score to 4-0.

In the sixth and final inning, the Setters brought three runs across the plate to ensure the mercy rule victory 8-0. In the circle, Anna Acevedo earned her seventh win of the season going six innings allowing three hits, and no runs, while striking out four hitters.

Borino and Valle highlighted Pace's offense as they both had three hits to go with two runs batted in. Gorman, Garcia, and Jenkins posted two base knocks in the game. As a team, the Setters produced 14 hits in game two.
