NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The Pace University softball team was forced to settle for a series split with Southern Connecticut State in a northeast 10 series, with Pace taking game one, 3-1, in extra innings but falling in game two, Pace now sits at an overall record of 29-11 overall and 13-5 in NE10 play.
Game One
Extra innings were required to settle game one, as neither team could get on the board, with
Gisselle Garcia dueling with the Owls' Jessica Perucki. In the tenth inning, Garcia stepped into the box and would be the one to tag up Perucki for the first run of the game, singling to bring around
Riley Jenkins in the tenth inning.
Sophie Valle followed that up with a single to get on base, bringing
Kaylee Matsuda into the box. Matsuda delivered a clutch single to score Valle and
Madison Picerno, who pinch-ran for Garcia. The Owls plated one in the bottom of the tenth but could not make the three runs up, allowing Pace to come out on top. Garcia sat down 14 on strikes while earning her 16
th win of the season.
Game Two
Game two was a much different story for the Blue and Gold,
Raelle Gorman supplied the first run with an RBI knock in the first inning, and Anna Acavedo would fall victim to the long ball the rest of the way. Perucki tagged her in her first two at-bats, getting Gorman's run back with an RBI single of her own in the first, and then taking Acevedo deep in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth inning, a three-run home run off the bat of Rachel Lewis broke the game open, making the score 7-1. In the following inning, two more runs came around on a double to trigger the mercy rule, giving the Owls game two, 9-1.
