Setters Handle Business on the Road Against Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Behind Gisselle Garcia's stellar performance in the circle, the Pace University softball team captured a 4-0 victory over Queens College. The Setters improve to 25-10 overall and remain 10-4 within the Northeast-10.

Garcia began her day by striking out four of the first seven batters in the contest. The score remained stuck at zero until the Setter offense found success in the top half of the third inning.

Lead-off hitter Kaylee Matsuda found her way around the base paths and was driven home with an RBI single from Riley Jenkins. Brianna Shea followed up the RBI single, with one of her own driving home the second run of the game to give Pace a 2-0 advantage.

After a quick bottom of the third, the Setters struck again with a Katerina Luna double to center field that brought home the third and fourth runs of the game. Moving into the fifth the Blue and Gold held a 4-0 lead which would remain the rest of the way.

Garcia added six strikeouts in the final four innings to solidify Pace's 25th win of the 2024 season. The 4-0 victory marks the 18th time this season that the Setters have won by four or more runs.

The Queens offense was no match for Garcia as she tallied 11 strikeouts in a complete game shutout surrendering only three hits. Her performance marks the 11th time this year that Garcia has surpassed double-digit strikeouts in the circle. The Lemon Grove, CA native currently ranks tenth in the nation for earned run average with a 1.11 ERA.

The Setters produced nine hits in the game with Carolina Iturriaga accounting for three on the day. Luna (1-for-4, 2 RBIs), Jenkins (1-for-4, 1 RBI), and Shea (1-for-2, 1 RBI) lead the way offensively for Pace.

Up next for the Blue and Gold is a home doubleheader against the University of New Haven on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Pace Softball Field.
