PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 9 Pace University men's lacrosse team survived a scare at Northwell Stadium Wednesday afternoon, thanks to a combined 12 goals from
Ryan Kemp and
Daniel Zabbia, Pace was able to come from behind and take down American International College, 17-14.
Pace improves to 11-1 overall and 7-1 in Northeast 10 play. Pace now turns its attention to its final game of the regular season, heading to Manchester, NH to face off with Saint Anselm College on Tuesday, Apr. 23 at 4 p.m.
It was a game of runs, with Pace scoring the first two goals but AIC responding with four unanswered to take a 4-2 lead early in the second quarter. Pace regained the lead in less than three minutes thanks to goals from Kemp,
Declan Landers, and Zabbia and from there the two teams traded goals until AIC's Carter Linkletter fired another shot into the back of the net to send the Yellow Jackets into halftime with a slim 8-7 lead.
After winning the first face-off of the third quarter,
Colin Reese took a pass from Kemp and tied the game up 42 seconds into the quarter. The two teams traded goals the rest of the way in the third as AIC entered the final 15 minutes with a 13-10 edge.
With time winding down, the Pace offense turned into high gear. Veratti scored less than 30 seconds into the quarter to swing the momentum into Pace's favor while cutting the lead to one goal, and that was what the Setters needed. Kemp and
Colin Reese gave Pace the lead and while AIC tied it one more time, Kemp and Zabbia scored the final three goals of the game to close out the win.
Kemp finished with career highs in point goals, six, and point, 10. Zabbia fired six goals which tied his career high.
Maxwell Streety was almost unstoppable on the X for Pace, going 25-32 on the X with 19 ground balls.
Rowan Kelly continued his strong play on the defensive end, causing three turnovers while Veratti caused a pair himself.
