PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – It was a rematch of last year's NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Semifinals under the lights at Northwell Stadium Thursday night between the No. 1 Pace University women's lacrosse team and No. 5 Florida Southern College. Pace's
Angelina Porcello stole the show, scoring eight goals on eight shots, and causing eight turnovers in a 16-12 triumph for the Blue and Gold.
The eight caused turnovers ties her own record which she set last year against Southern Connecticut University, while the eight goals ties the program record, joining
Emma Rafferty, who netted eight goals against Franklin Pierce last year.
Pace improves to 4-0 on the year and will once again take to Northwell Stadium this coming Wednesday, Mar. 13, with the opening draw set for 6 p.m.
The Mocs struck first, winning the opening draw and storming down the field, and scoring less than one minute into the game.
Less than a minute later, after a green card was issued to the visitors,
Maddie Schubert found herself in a familiar position, lining up for a free position shot. Schubert buried the shot to convert the man-up opportunity and tie the game up.
A couple of minutes later, Porcello netted her first goal of the day to swing the lead back to the Setters off a free position shot, but it wouldn't last long as FSC won the ensuing draw and 17 seconds later tied the game at 2-2.
Scoring was halted for a little, but it was Porcello who broke the silence, scoring with 6:50 left to grab the Blue and Gold a 3-2 lead. Two goals in 14 seconds gave the Mocs some momentum but it was killed immediately as Pace scored three unanswered goals off the sticks of Porcello,
Nikki Mottes, and
Sydney Juvelier to take a 6-4 lead into the second quarter.
Pace outscored FSC 5-3 in the second quarter, including three more Porcello goals, to take an 11-7 advantage into the break.
Southern made some adjustments at halftime and started to find success in the third quarter, rattling off three straight goals while suffocating the Setter offense. In need of a goal, it was none other than Porcello who delivered the goal the Blue and Gold needed to make the score 12-10.
While FSC did score first, the Setters responded with four goals of their own to put the game out of reach and give them the victory, 16-12. Porcello rounded out her stat line with six ground balls and three draw controls.
Mackenzie Carita, Schubert, and Juvelier each netted a pair of goals while
Annie Sheehan and Mottes each provided one, while Mottes assisted on two other goals.
Alexandra Quinn led the Setters with six draw controls.
