PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Two top-five teams clashed Monday evening at Northwell Stadium as the No. 1 Pace University women's lacrosse team faced off with the No. 4 University of Tampa Spartans and behind five goals from
Sydney Juvelier, who scored her 100
th career goal this evening, the Setters took down the Spartans 11-5.
Pace stays perfect, improving to 3-0 while UT falls to 2-2. This is the second year in a row Pace has taken down UT with Pace winning 19-8 in Tampa.
The reigning NE10 Rookie of the Week got the Setters on the board first.
Maddie Schubert converted the game's first free position shot to give Pace an early lead.
After a two-plus minute possession, UT tied the game up off the stick of Cece Colombo with just under nine minutes remaining. The visitors got their only lead of the game a couple minutes later thanks to a goal from Sophi Wrisk off an assist from Peyton Howell. The first quarter looked like it would end with UT in front, but Juvelier took a pass from
Nikki Mottes with 32 seconds left to deadlock the game at 2-2 going into the second quarter.
Juveiler turned it into high gear in the second quarter, scoring the first two goals of the quarter, thanks to assists from
Angelina Porcello and
Annie Sheehan to swing the lead back to Pace for good, 4-2. Mottes capped the short run off with a goal of her own to run the lead up to 5-2. The Spartans got the goal back shortly after but with five seconds left, Schubert returned the lead to three goals, 6-3, as the team's broke for halftime.
Each team only scored once in the third, with Pace striking first thanks to the Juvelier-Mottes connection and a Sarah Hinkle goal at the end of the third to give Pace a 7-4 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
The Blue and Gold scored four unanswered goals to put the game out of reach for Tampa in the final quarter.
The Setter defense dismantled Tampa's offensive attack, holding them to a season low in goals and forcing them into 18 turnovers for the second game in a row.
Samantha Tanguay stopped seven Spartan shots in net, while
Delilah Doyle forced three turnovers.
Up next for the Blue and Gold is a rematch of last year's NCAA DII Women's Lacrosse National Semifinals, with the No. 5 Moccasins of Florida Southern College coming to Northwell Stadium on Thursday for a 6 p.m. meeting.
