Setters March Past New Haven in 11-0 Rout

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Behind 11 runs, the Pace University baseball team earned a win to open its weekend series over the University of New Haven Friday afternoon. With the victory, the Setters improve to 13-7 overall, and 6-2 in the Northeast-10.

The offense onslaught began in the third inning for Pace after an RBI triple from Luke Rivara. Matthew Rinaldi followed that up with a long home run to right center to extend the lead to 3-0, in what was only the beginning for Pace. In a match-up against New Haven's Liam Carroll, the NCAA DII leader in ERA, the Setters made a statement at the plate.

In the next inning, Dylan Koch tallied the fourth run with a single to left field, and in the next few innings the floodgates opened for the Blue and Gold. RBI from Brayden Sweppenhiser and Matthew Franco in the fifth increased the Setters lead to 7-0 with still no answer from New Haven.

In the sixth, Rivara smacked a homer over the center field wall to put the game out of reach, 9-0. The Setters poured on two more in the eighth inning and closed out the game to earn the 11-0 win.

Patrick Gleason dominated the mound once again for the Setters as he threw eight innings surrendering no runs, four hits, and four strikeouts. His performance marks the third time in five starts he has gone eight innings on the bump.

The Blue and Gold were led by a career-high three RBI from Rivara as he went 3-for-4 with a triple and a home run, coming just a double short of the cycle. The lead-off hitter, Rinaldi, flirted with the cycle coming up just a single shy of the feat in a 3-for-4 performance. Anthony Labita, Koch, and Franco all tallied multiple hits, with the team totaling 14 in the contest.

The Setters continue their three-game series against New Haven with a noon doubleheader tomorrow at Peter X. Finnerty Field.
