PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – With their Saturday doubleheader split, the Pace University baseball team claimed the series victory over New Haven University, 2-1. The Blue and Gold captured game one 6-3 and dropped game two 1-7. Following the doubleheader, Pace moves to 14-8 overall, and 7-3 within the Northeast-10.
Game One
After both teams brought home a run in the first inning the Setters opened up the scoring with three runs in the fourth. Two RBIs from Josh Miller and one from Matthew Franco gave Pace a 4-2 advantage over New Haven heading into the fifth.
A sacrifice fly out from New Haven trimmed Pace's lead to one run in the fifth, 4-3. The rest of the way, New Haven failed to match the Setter's production and Pace snagged game one by a final score of 6-3.
Off the back of great pitching displays from Pace, the Setters allowed only two earned runs while striking out seven batters. Dan Brown pitched 4.2 innings in his start, Marco Siracusa earned the win out of the bullpen, and Sean Costello successfully closed out the game to claim his fourth save of the season. Costello matched the record for freshman saves in a regular season earning his fourth of the year.
Batting-wise, the Setters had nine hits in the contest with Franco going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Mason Baronian posting a 2-for-4 day with 2 runs scored. Miller produced two RBIs, while Anthony Labita and Hunter Goldstein each added one.
Game Two
In game two of the twin-bill, the Setters struggled to find momentum at the plate against New Haven's Vincent Fusco. New Haven's bats grabbed the lead over Pace with two runs in the fourth inning and never looked back.
The Setters fell game two, 7-1, in an uncharacteristic performance both on the mound and at the plate.
Fusco led the way for the Chargers, pitching six innings allowing one run and only four hits. New Haven tallied 11 hits in game two compared to Pace's four.
