PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – With another superb performance from the pitching staff, the Pace University baseball team captured their 12th win of the season over Saint Thomas Aquinas, 4-1. With the win, the Blue and Gold are now 12-7 overall, and 5-2 within the Northeast-10.Â
Josh Miller had the home crowd on their feet in the second inning with a frozen rope that sailed over the left field fence for the first run of the game. The homer marked Miller's second of the season as the junior continues to showcase his power in the bottom half of the lineup. Â
Later in the inning, Brayden Sweppenhiser drove home the second run of the game for Pace with a single down the left-field line. After two innings, the Setters held a 2-0 lead, one that would remain the same until the fifth inning. Â
Saint Thomas Aquinas changed their zero on the scoreboard in the fifth with an RBI single up the middle cutting into Pace's lead. The Setters answered the next inning with an RBI single through the ride side from Luke Rivara to give Pace a 3-1 advantage. Â
The Spartans threatened Pace's lead in the seventh, but a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning helped the Setters escape the pressure. In the eighth, the Setters tacked on one more run after a single from Dylan Koch to extend their lead to 4-1. With a three-run lead heading into the final inning, Vincent Vartolone retired Saint Thomas Aquinas to secure Pace's victory. Â
Ryan Degnan drew the start on the mound for Pace and tossed five innings allowing just one run off six hits. Pace's strong bullpen showcased their skill as Marco Siracusa and Vartolone shut the door on the Spartans in the final four innings. Siracusa went three innings with three strikeouts while Vartolone earned the save striking out one batter in one inning of work. Â
Four different Setters tallied two hits in the contest as the home squad knocked 11 total on the day. Koch, Rivara, and Miller each had two hits and an RBI. Â
