PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Gisselle Garcia continued her dominance on the mound, tossing a no-hitter against the University of Bridgeport in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. The Pace University softball team captured game one 5-0, and game two, 4-0, improving to 11-3 in the 2024 season.
Game One
After breaking the all-time Pace strikeout record in her last start, Garcia picked up where she left off, striking out two batters in the first inning. After two scoreless innings from both sides, Pace brought home the first runs of the game in the bottom of the third. Off a two-RBI single from Brianna Shea the Setters jumped ahead 2-0 after three innings of play.
With the 2-0 lead, Garcia kept pushing the throttle against Bridgeport, retiring the side in the fourth and leaving a zero in the Purple Knight's hit column.
In the sixth inning, the Blue and Gold extended their lead to 5-0 after an RBI double from Riley Jenkins and then a two-run inside-the-park home run from Sophie Valle. Garcia commanded the Bridgeport offense the rest of the way to solidify her no-hitter and Pace's tenth victory of the season by a final score of 5-0.
On the day, Garcia threw a complete game recording no hits, and 11 strikeouts while allowing only six batters to reach base. The junior continues to produce masterful pitching performances as she has registered double-digit strikeouts in five of her six appearances. The no-hitter marks her second of the season as the Lemon Grove, CA native pitched a perfect game earlier in the season.
Shea went 2-for-3 providing two RBIs in the contest while Valle also posted two RBIs going 1-for-3 at the dish.
Game Two
The second game of Sunday's doubleheader presented a similar narrative for the Blue and Gold. Anna Acevedo took the mound for Pace and produced a stellar outing for the home squad. In the first inning, Acevedo made a statement by striking out two batters to give the Setters confidence heading up to bat.
In the bottom of the first, Jenkins kick-started the offense, bringing home two runs on a single to center field. The next four innings stayed scoreless as Pace carried the 2-0 advantage into the fifth when they struck again at the plate.
An Alexa Borino single brought home two runs to increase the Setter's lead to 4-0 heading into the sixth inning. In the final two innings of the doubleheader, Acevedo closed the door on the visitors helping Pace earn their 11th win an outcome of, 4-0.
Acevedo pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits while striking out six Bridgeport hitters. At the plate, the Setters were led by Borino's two-RBI performance and Jenkins' RBI single.
