PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Tuesday afternoon, the Pace University softball team fell at the hands of No. 23 Wilmington University of Delaware by a final score of 4-0 in game one and 3-1 in game two. The Setters now sit at 11-5 overall on the season and will have their first in-conference game Friday.
In the first game of the day, the Setters failed to get a run on the board as Kylee Gunkel shut down the Blue and Gold at the plate allowing just three hits in the contest. Wilmington tallied a run in the third and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead over Pace.
In the bottom of the sixth a two-run homer from Wilmington put the finishing touches on their 4-0 victory as the Setters could not match the production of the Wildcats' offense.
In game two, Wilmington's pitching staff presented another difficult task for the Blue and Gold with Delani Sheehan on the mound. The sophomore tossed a complete game for the Wildcats allowing just one run off four hits.
Wilmington snagged an early 2-0 lead after the first and never looked back. In the sixth, Pace trimmed the lead to 3-1 after an RBI sacrifice fly from Alexa Borino but it was not enough, and the Setters fell short of the win.
The Blue and Gold will look to get back on the right track Friday afternoon back at home against Saint Michael's College. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
