PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The No.1 Pace University women's lacrosse team continued where they left off last season and opened the season with a 17-7 victory over RV Roberts Wesleyan University Tuesday afternoon at Northwell Stadium.
The reigning IWLCA Player of the Year,
Angelina Porcello, has not missed a beat since last season, assisting on the first goal of the season which came off the stick
Maddie Schubert.
Twenty seconds later,
Annie Sheehan scored her first collegiate goal and the flood gates opened from there with Porcello scoring again followed by
Sydney Juvelier, which was assisted by non-other than Porcello, and Porcello yet again finding the back of the net to make the score 5-0 with under seven minutes to play.
The Redhawks got on the board finally thanks to the stick of Annie Mulhall, but the Setters responded to the one goal with two of their own from
Nikki Mottes and Juvelier yet again.
Five more Setter shots found the back of the net in the second quarter, with three of them coming on women-up chances. Prior to that, Schubert netted her first collegiate goal to make the score 8-1.
Margaret Flocco, Juvelier and Schubert all converted their chances while putting the Setters well out in front as the team's broke for halftime with Pace leading 12-2.
Pace continued to build the lead throughout the second half. The Redhawks showed some life at the end of the game, scoring the final three goals of the game, but it was too little too late against the defending national champions.
Juvelier and Schubert finished with a team-high four goals a piece while Porcello netted a pair.
Abigail O'Connor posted two while Sheehan, Flocco, Mottes and Alyssa Dvornak each provided one.
Samantha Tanguay spent 44 minutes in between the pipes, making three saves while
