MANCHESTER, NH. – Four Setters scored in double-figures as the Pace University men's basketball team held off Southern New Hampshire University on the road, 70-68, Saturday afternoon. This evening is the first Setter win at SNHU since 2006.
The Blue and Gold improved to 15-10 overall and 11-8 in Northeast-10 play with the win. The Setters next game sends them back to Goldstein Fitness Center for a Wednesday night matchup with American International College on Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
The home team appeared to be in the drivers seat, as they used an 8-3 spirit in the final two minutes of the first half to take a seven point lead, 36-29, into the locker room for halftime.
The lead stayed in the Penmen's favor for a awhile until
Bryan Powell connected on a turnover which was the spark plug the Setter offense needed. Four more points from Powell, alongside free throws from
Jamaal Waters and a pair of buckets from
Tray Alexander tied the game up at 51-51 with just under nine minutes remaining. The lead swung to the Setters after two free throws for Alexander, but it didn't last long as the Penmen almost immediately grabbed the lead back.
As time winded down, the two teams jockeyed for the lead but ultimately Pace scored 10 of the final 12 points to come away with the victory. In the Setters final trip down, Alexander fired a triple that would have been the dagger, but Waters grabbed an offensive rebound to force SNHU to foul Pace and send them to the free throw line. Bresnan ended up at the line and connected one-of-two free throws, giving the Penmen a chance. SNHU could not get a good look at the basket and was forced into a tough triple as time expired, sending Pace home with the victory.
Marc Dadika and
Sean Bresnan led Pace in scoring with 18 points each. Alexander and Powell finished with 12 and 11 points respectively. Powell hauled in eight rebounds to pace the Setters.
SNHU got 14 points from Alex Rivara to lead the way for their offensive attack.
