PLEASANTVILLE N.Y. – A second-half surge propelled the Pace University men's basketball team to a dominant 78-57 victory over American International College, Wednesday night at the Goldstein Fitness Center. The win improves Pace's overall record to 16-10, and 12-8 in the Northeast-10.
The Setters welcomed a new member in the all-time top ten scorers as Bryan Powell continues to move up the list of Pace basketball's greats. Powell supplied 21 points on 10-14 from the field to overtake ninth position on the all-time scorers list with 1,567 points. The senior forward should continue to make an immense impact down the stretch for the Blue and Gold.
It was a dominant effort for Pace as the home squad cruised past American International following an impressive second half. After a close first half led to a 30-35 advantage for Pace, a 12-5 run to open the second half helped build a 48-36 lead over the Yellow Jackets.
Midway through the half, back-to-back makes from behind the arc from Sean Bresnan and Jabari Nurse extended the Pace lead to 16 points, 61-45. Off another solid 10-0 run in the second half, Pace claimed control of the game as several different Setters contributed on the offensive end.
American International finished the final minutes with a late push but was left with an insurmountable deficit as Pace sailed to their 16th win of the season, 78-57, behind 48 second half points.
The Setters picked up where they left off with their offense in the paint as they produced 50 of their 78 points from down low. Pace knocked down 53.3 percent of their shots from the floor compared to the Yellow jackets 36.7 percent.
The Setter's offense was highlighted by Powell's 21 points. Tray Alexander and Bresnan tallied 14 each, while Nurse added 10. Both Powell and Alexander snatched three steals on the night.
Action continues Saturday afternoon for Pace with a road match-up in Waltham, MA. against Bentley University.
