PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Behind a career-high 40 points from
Bryan Powell, the Pace University men's basketball team returned to the win column with a 93-80 win over Franklin Pierce University at Goldstein Fitness Center. Pace improves to 13-10 overall and 9-8 in Northeast 10 play.
The last Setter to hit the 40-point mark was Bryan's brother,
Brandon Powell, who did it on senior day last year with 44 points, also against Franklin Pierce. Powell's previous career-high was 29 back in 2022, which was also set against the Ravens.
Powell got to work early, scoring the first six points for the Blue and Gold to take a 6-2 lead. He then ceded to
Marc Dadika for a short time, who tallied six straight points of his own to own a seven-point lead seven minutes into the game.
Jabari Nurse got the lead up to 20 with 1:44 remaining in the opening half with a triple. The half was capped off with a
Jamaal Waters put back dunk to send the home team into the locker room with an 18-point advantage, 49-31. Powell himself accounted for 22-points on 10-14 from the field.
The Ravens would not go away, coming out of the locker room and immediately rattling off a ten-point run to cut the lead to single-digits, 49-41. The lead stayed in the single digits until Nurse slashed through the lane and finished at the rim. That kick started an 8-0 run to get the lead back up to double-digits, 66-51.
While the Ravens did hang around, Powell and company kept the Ravens at bay and closed the game incredibly strong. Powell hit the 40-point mark with the final two points of the contest, a pair of free throws with 31 seconds remaining.
The 40 points for Powell were accompanied by nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Waters added 13 points and eight rebounds while Dadika added 12 points.
Up next for the Setters is Assumption University, with the two teams set to share the court on Tuesday in Goldstein Fitness Center with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. The game also serves as the yearly Pride Hoops event.
