WORCESTER, MA. – The Pace University football team took a one-point lead into the final 15 minutes against no. 24 Assumption University but would fall in the final 15 minutes, 36-24, Saturday afternoon.
Pace falls to 1-4 on the year and will return home to welcome Post University to Northwell Stadium this coming Saturday.
Assumption would be the first to get on the scoreboard, finding the end zone on a 33-yard touchdown pass. They would follow up with a one-yard touchdown run to get the lead up to 14-0.
In the ensuing drive, the Setters made consistent progress up the field, but it wouldn't be until
Brandon Sobotker broke free for a 38-yard run to get within two yards of the endzone. Sobotker was rewarded for his efforts and got the final two yards to score, making the score 14-6.
On the first play of the ensuring drive for the Greyhounds,
Andrew Albertelli picked off a pass and took it 30 yards to the endzone, getting Pace within two, 14-12. The Greyhounds would find the endzone one more time in the first half to send them into the locker room at halftime with a 21-12 lead.
The third quarter was all Pace. Assumption received the ball to start the half, but they would not have it for long.
Paul Cimicata forced a fumble and
Jaden Farrow scooped it up to allow Pace to start the drive on the Assumption 38-yard line. While the Setters didn't convert on this drive, it wouldn't be long until they did.
On the next drive, Pace cashed in a field goal from 22 yards out to cut the lead to 21-15. After forcing a three and out on the next drive, Pace regained possession on the Assumption 17 thanks to a 37-yard punt return by
Teddy Harper.
Ethan Coady got the Setters the lead on a five-yard touchdown run to take a 22-21 lead.
Entering the fourth quarter, Assumption had possession and completed a long drive to regain the lead, 29-22. Later on, they would seal the game when Coady was sacked and fumbled the ball and the loose ball was taken 74 yards to the house by the Greyhounds.
Sobotker finished with 108 yards on the ground off of 18 carries.
