Georgette Cosentino each supplied double-doubles as the Pace University volleyball team won its seventh straight match, taking down Georgian Court University, 3-1 (23-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-20) Tuesday evening.
Pace improves to 7-1 and will turn its attention towards a road match against West Chester University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
GCU came from behind in the first set, erasing a four-point deficit midway through the set to squeak out a set one victory, 25-23.
Set two appeared to be all Pace, with the Setters opening up a lead that got as large 16-8 and winning eight of nine points. Pace got its first set point at 24-18, but the Lions would dig deep to stay in the set, managing to take a 25-24 lead by rattling off seven straight points which featured three service aces. With their backs against the wall, the Setters caught a break and tied the set up at 25-25. Melendez delivered a kill to get the Setters another set point and closed the deal with an attack error by the Lions, taking the set 27-25.
In the third set, Pace once again got out to a fast start, taking a 15-9 lead early on. In that stretch, the Setters got eight kills. However, the score would be tied up at 17-17 thanks to a solid stretch from the Lions.
Yasmeen Muhammad delivered a pair of kills and combined with an attack error by the Lions gave the Setters some room at 22-19.
Daniella Abbastante and
Brielle Jones closed the deal with back-to-back kills to win the third set, 25-21.
It would take some time in set four for either team to get a foothold, but it would end up being Pace who got the foothold. Muhammad once again delivered a pair of kills combined with a Lions attack error to take a four point lead, 19-15. From there, the Setters kept the Lions at bay and secured the match with a 25-20 win,
Muhammad finished with 17 kills while hitting an impressive .652. Jones posted 13 kills and 10 digs while Melendez had 12 kills and 11 digs. Cosentino concluded the match with 27 assists and 14 digs.
The Setters made their presence felt at the net, finishing with 21 total blocks, 18 assists and three solo. Muhammad and Shirley each had five block assists while Muhammad had two solo blocks.
