Krista Dietz scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Pace University Field Hockey clipped Southern New Hampshire University in the teams Northeast-10 opener at Peter X. Finnerty Field on Saturday.
Pace improves to 4-2 on the year and have won its last three contests in overtime while SNHU drops to 1-3. Pace will welcome the team that took them down in the NE10 Championships last year, Adelphi, on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m.
The first strike was registered by the Penmen's Anne Wiersma, who scored in the final two minutes of the opening period to take a 1-0 lead into the second quarter.
The lead would swing back over to Pace in the second quarter. Deitz got a shot by the Penmen's goalie for points 98 and 99, as well as tying the game a 1-1.
Eveline Bussmaker swung the lead in favor of the Setters, scoring with less than one minute left in the first half to give the Blue and Gold a 2-1 lead. The goal is the graduate student's first goal of the 2023 campaign.
Eliza Bates tied the game up for the Penmen in the third quarter and the score remained tied for the rest of regulation.
Dietz delivered the game-winner five minutes into the extra period off a pass from
Noëlle Meij to send the Setters home with the victory.
Pace out-shot SNHU 24-12 and 16-7 on target.
