Setters Earn Upset Win Over No.1 Warriors

EAST STROUDSBURG, PA. -- Tavia Flecksteiner served as the hero today, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime as the Pace Field Hockey team upset the reigning National Champions, East Stroudsburg University, 4-3.

Pace improves to 3-2 and now turns its attention to NE10 play with SNHU coming to Peter X. Finnerty Field on Saturday with the match set to begin at 4:30 p.m.

"Today was the definition of a team win." said Head Coach Kayte Biordi. "It took everyone for us to pull away with it. Although, we were down multiple times, it never felt like we were out of it, we played our game!"

The Warriors struck first, 13 minutes into the game, Jady van Gils gave ESU the lead off a feed from Lia Parker.

Julia Eshleman tied the game up in the second quarter, taking a pass from Melissa Ritchie for her first goal of the season.

The lead shifted over to the Setters briefly. In the third quarter, Noëlle Meij found the back of the cage to give the Setters a 2-1 lead. Eshleman assisted on the goal for her third point of the afternoon.

In the next five minutes, the Warriors regained the lead thanks to a second goal from van Gils and a converted penalty stroke gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead.

That lead held for the majority of the fourth quarter until it was time for the hero of the team's win over Frostburg State on Saturday got her turn. Krista Dietz delivered the equalizer off a pass from Eshleman.

The game winner came from one of the top scorers in all the land, Fleckstiner put the ball in the back of the cage off a feed from Dietz, completing the upset of the Warriors.

Celeste Pagliaroli was stellar in the cage. The true freshman faced 36 shots, with 18 being on-target, and Pagliaroli stopped a career-high 14 shots.
