WATERBURY, CONN. – The Pace women's soccer team utilized a pair of goals in the second half to start the 2023 campaign 1-0 with a 2-1 win over Caldwell in the team's first match of the Post University Classic.
Pace will face the host, Post, on Saturday at 2 p.m. to conclude the Post Classic.
Caldwell struck first, in the 30
th minute, Sarah Constanza registered her first goal of the 2023 campaign to take a 1-0 lead.
The lead persisted throughout the first half and into the second until the 69
th minute.
Alexis Lee (Staten Island, N.Y./Saint Joseph by the Sea) netted the equalizer for her first collegiate goal off an assist from
Alison Dwyer (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland High School). Following a throw in, Dwyer made a quick pass to Lee who first a shot from 25 yards out and beat the keeper to the back post.
Not soon after, the lead swung over to the Setters.
Andrea Flores (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester), thanks to an assist from
Alyssa Cabral (Hollis Hills, N.Y./Francis Lewis), was able to net the eventual game winner in the 74
th minute. Following a corner kick, Cabral secured the loose ball and sent the ball across to Flores who, like Lee, utilized the back post to beat the keeper and secure the winning goal.
The Setters' offense out-shot the Cougars 17-7, 8-1 in shots on goal while also earning more corners than its opponent, 5-1. Eight of those Setters shots came from
Allison Carr (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) and
Cecilia Puentes (Garwood, N.J./Arthur L Johnson).
Anna Fiore (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) earned the win in net after presiding over all 90 minutes.
