Flecksteiner Shines in Season-Opening Victory

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Behind a pair of goals from Tavia Flecksteiner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), the Pace University field hockey team started the season on the right foot, taking down Saint Thomas Aquinas College 2-0 at Peter X. Finnerty Field.

The Setters return to action on Sunday when Newberry makes the trip from South Carolina to take on the Setters at noon.

Pace was in control of the game of both sides of the field from the outset of the game, not allowing STAC to take a single shot in the first quarter, while Pace managed to fire off nine shots, but could not get one past the Spartans' goalie.

Pace did earn a penalty stroke in the first quarter which Flecksteiner took, but Carlijn De Groot managed to make a save to keep Pace off the board in the first quarter.

The Setters were able to convert in the second quarter. Taking a pass from Krista Dietz (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), Flecksteiner fired a shot from the left side and beat the goalie to the far side of the net to take a 1-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Flecksteiner was not finished this afternoon. Flecksteiner took a pass from Jessica Wolfe (Halfmoon, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and got her second goal by De Groot for her first collegiate multi-goal performance.

Celeste Pagliaroli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland High School) made her Setter debut this afternoon, playing all 60 minutes in goal while saving six shots and turning in a shutout.

The defense in front of Pagliaroli was just as effective as Pagliaroli, only allowing STAC to take nine shots and only yielded four penalty corners.
