PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 10 Pace University field hockey team suffered its first setback of the 2023 season, falling 6-3 to the Newberry Wolves Sunday afternoon at Peter X. Finnerty Field.
The Setters will hit the road for the first time in this season for their next game, heading to Bloomsburg PA on Wednesday, Sept. 6 for a 4 p.m. meeting with Bloomsburg University.
The Setters open the scoring this afternoon with the connection that led the team to it's 2-0 victory over STAC in the match prior, with
Krista Dietz (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) finding
Tavia Flecksteiner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) to take a 1-0 lead. It is Flecksteiner's third goal of the season and Dietz's third assist.
Newberry responded quickly, earning a penalty stroke. The Wolves' Parker Keeler converted the penalty stroke to even things up at 1-1.
The lead swung back to Pace in the second quarter when
Noëlle Meij recorded her first goal of the season thanks to an assist by
Jessica Wolfe (Halfmoon, N.Y./Shenendehowa), the first assist of the year for Wolfe.
Newberry once again responded quickly, this time the stick of Emma Westbrook provided the equalizer off a pass from Parker Keeler.
Newberry took the lead in what would become the final lead change of the game in the third quarter. Tasmin Bangert got a shot past the Setters'
Celeste Pagliaroli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland High School) off a feed from Marissa Plumer to take the lead for good.
Two more Newberry goals came in the fourth quarter. While Dietz was able to sneak in a goal late in the fourth quarter, as they had all afternoon, Newberry responded with a goal of their own to put Pace away for good.
While Pagliaroli was tagged with the loss, she did make 10 saves.
