PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Continuing a torrid home stretch, the Pace University softball team swept an afternoon doubleheader against Assumption on Saturday. The victories push the Setters' record to 15-13 overall this season, including 7-3 in the NE10.
GAME ONE – Pace 2, Assumption 1
A pitcher's dual in the opener finally resulted in a walk-off win for the home squad. Trailing 1-0 with two outs in the seventh, and runners on first and second, freshman
Sophie Valle (Chino, Calif./Walnut) served as the hero.
The rookie knocked a single through the right side to score the game-tying run in
Arianna Guarracino (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley), and after an errant throw went out of play over the catcher's head, Pace's game-winning run also crossed home plate in the form of
Sammi Swenson (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East).
Sophomore
Alexandra Tejeda (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) began the seventh-inning rally with a lead-off walk while Swenson legged out a bunt single.
Without
Gisselle Garcia (Lemon Grove, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic) though, the Setters wouldn't have had their chances late. The sophomore allowed the lone run on just five hits in a complete-game gem. A day after striking out 12 against AIC, she tossed 11 more punchouts against the Greyhounds.
Game Two – Pace 11, Assumption 3 (Five Innings)
With runs at a premium in the opener, Pace's offense erupted in the finale. The Setters posted at least three runs in three consecutive innings en route to building up a 10-0 lead through four innings.
Eight different Pace players recorded at least one hit in the game while Tejeda went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
Freshman
Kaylee Matsuda (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Iolani School) joined in with a monstrous effort of her own, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Junior
Jenny Gordon (Colonia, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) also registered multiple hits courtesy of a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs and two runs scored.
In the circle, junior
Anna Acevedo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) earned the win with yet another solid outing. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits across the five frames of work.
