PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Continuing a 10-game homestand, the Pace University softball team split a doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday. The Setters now hold an overall record of 16-14 this season, including an 8-4 mark against NE10 foes.
GAME ONE – Pace 4, SCSU 0
It was another gem from
Gisselle Garcia (Lemon Grove, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic) that fueled the Blue and Gold in their win. The sophomore, who was named the NE10 Pitcher of the Week on Monday, tossed a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts.
Garcia has now allowed just one earned run across her last 28 innings pitched, racking up an absurd 51 strikeouts during that span. She won all four of those outings while yielding just 12 total hits.
Pace's offense was supplied by a solo home run from senior
Carolina Iturriaga (North Hills, Calif./Grover Cleveland) in the fifth inning followed by a three-run effort in the sixth.
Freshman
Katerina Luna (Mckinney, Texas/Rock Hill) knocked in two of those insurance runs courtesy of a two-out single through the left side. Sophomore
Alexa Borino (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) and junior
Sammi Swenson (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) each scored on the base hit.
GAME TWO – SCSU 3, Pace 2
Trailing 3-0 after three innings, the Setters' offense was unable to replicate its clutch ways from the opener in the second game.
Freshman
Sophie Valle (Chino, Calif./Walnut) knocked in Pace's first run on an RBI double in the fifth. Fellow rookie
Kaylee Matsuda (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Iolani School) scored on the play after reaching base on an error.
Another freshman,
Riley Jenkins (San Diego, Calif./University City), scored Pace's second tally on back-to-back wild pitches in the sixth. Jenkins reached on a lead-off single before moving over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Swenson.
