SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- The Pace University softball team started the season with a doubleheader sweep of the IUP Crimson Hawks wining 2-1 in eight innings in game one and 7-0 in game two. The games were played at Robb Field at Shippensburg University.Â
Freshman
Kaylee Matsuda (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Iolani School) went 5-for-7 on the day batting .714 and scoring two runs. Senior
Arianna Guarracino (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley)Â went 2-for-5 and also scored twice. Sophomore
Alexa Borino (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst)Â batted .333 (2-for-6) with four RBI and a double. Sophomore
Brianna Shea (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino) had two RBI.Â
Up next, the Setters will play host-school Shippensburg for two games starting at 11 a.m.Â
Game 1: Pace 2, IUP 1 (8 innings) | Box Score
The Setters scored the game-tying run in the top of the sixth inning as Shea hit a sac fly to right field, sending in Matsuda. Matsuda had singled to lead off the inning.Â
After giving up a leadoff walk, Giselle Garcia struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth.Â
Pace left one on in the top of the seventh, but kept the Crimson Hawks from scoring in the bottom of the inning and the game went to extras.Â
In the top of the eighth, Guarracino started on second and advanced to third on a sac bunt put down by Matsuda. Borino reached first via a throwing error by the IUP shortstop as Guarracino saw scored the eventual game-winning run.Â
In the final at bat attempt from IUP, Pace got out of the inning 1-2-3 with a sac bunt, swinging strikeout and pop up to outfield.Â
Garcia pitched all eight innings with a statline of 3 hits, one run scored and 15 strikeouts. Garcia had no errors and just one walk.Â
Game 2: Pace 7, IUP 0 | Box Score
The Setters scored five runs in the third inning. Borino doubled scoring Matusda and
Sammi Swenson (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East). Borino scored as Willa Poplaw doubled. Shea sent in Poplaw with an RBI-single and then scored herself two batters later ona first baseman error. Â
In the fourth inning, the Setters added another run as Guarracino scored ona sac fly by Borino.Â
In the fifth Haley Rusbul homered to center.Â
Anna Acevedo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) earned the win with five innings pitched, three hits, a walk and seven strikeouts. Priscilla Del Toro closed out the outing for the Setters with two innings pitched and two strikeouts wiht no hits, no runs and no errors.Â
