PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 2 ranked Pace University women's lacrosse team made it five wins in a row Wednesday evening, defeating NE10 opponent and No. 9 ranked Adelphi University 15-5 on March 29 at Pace Stadium.
The Setters (7-1, 4-0 NE10) took control right from the start, outscoring the Panthers (5-3, 3-1 NE10) 6-1 in the opening quarter. Freshman defender
Katie Long (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) scored twice in the period, with senior attack
Jolie Urraro (Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot) assisting on both goals. Junior midfielder
Angelina Porcello (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) and grad student midfielders
Kayla Conway (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and
Aleya Corretjer (Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) all scored in the period as well, putting Pace ahead by five. After Adelphi got on the board with 3:45 left, grad student midfielder
Emma Rafferty (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) scored just 25 seconds later to make it a five-goal lead for Pace after one.
Corretjer scored her second of the day early in the second quarter, and the Panthers quickly came back with one of their own. But the home team then rattled off four straight goals to open up an 11-2 lead. Conway scored two more, while Rafferty and junior attack
Margaret Flocco (Patterson, N.Y./Carmel) each added one. Adelphi scored with 27 seconds remaining, bringing it to an 11-3 score at the half.
The third quarter featured much less scoring on both ends, with Pace shutting the visitors out during the period. The Setters got goals from Long and Conway in the quarter, extending their lead to 10 heading to the fourth.
Rafferty's third of the day and a goal by sophomore attack
Nikki Mottes (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) pushed Pace's lead up 15-3, and a pair of late goals by the Panthers' Alexandra Leggio finished off the scoring as the Setters took a 15-5 win, improving to 7-1 on the season.
Conway led the Setters with four goals on the evening while adding one assist, and Rafferty had three goals and two helpers. Long scored three times, and Corretjer added two goals and two assists.
