Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. – The Pace University women's basketball team fell short to No. 4 seed Bentley, as the Setters were defeated 57-52 in the NE10 Semifinals by the Falcons Thursday evening.
A pair of early baskets by junior guard
Shanice Sinclair (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and one by sophomore forward
Tower Lorde (Saint Michael, Barbados/The St. Michael School) put the Setters ahead 6-3 in the opening minutes. Bentley's Julia Elie then scored back-to-back baskets to give the Falcons a 7-6 advantage, but Sinclair answered with her third field goal to give Pace the lead back. Freshman forward
Ciara Collins (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) made a pair of lauyps to put Pace ahead 12-9, but a late three pointer by Kari Brekke tied the game at 12 to end the first quarter.
The Falcons went on a 7-1 run early in the second to take the lead, but junior guard
Katumina Mansaray (Ontario, Canada/Cardinal Newman Secondary School/Tilton School) ended the stretch with an and-one to cut the Bentley lead to 18-17. Two more baskets by the home team were answered by a three pointer from grad student guard
Lauren Hackett (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's), but a pair of baskets by Amanda Kabantu were part of six straight Falcon points to end the half with Bentley holding a 28-22 lead.
The Setters came storming back in the third, as Lorde scored 10 points in the quarter to help Pace draw closer. A pair of lauyps from Mansaray and a three pointer by Hackett sparked the offense as well, but Elie scored eight of her own for the Falcons during the period, as Bentley took a 42-40 lead into the fourth.
A 7-1 run to start the fourth put the Falcons ahead 49-41, but the Setters came back with six straight points to cut the lead to three. A pair of baskets by Collins made it a 54-51 game with just under three minutes remaining. Pace eventually cut the lead to two, but a field goal by Kabantu extended it to a 56-52 advantage for the home team. The Setters couldn't close the gap, and the Falcons closed things out with a 57-52 win to advance to the NE10 Championship.
Lorde led the Setters with 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Sinclair and Collins each finished the night with 11 points. Hackett had eight points and seven rebounds for Pace.
