Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Pace University men's basketball team's season came to a close Saturday night, as the East Region's No. 5 seed Setters fell to No. 4 seed University of New Haven 83-57 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
It was tightly contested early, with both teams playing solid defensively. A three-pointer by New Haven opened the scoring, but back-to-back baskets by freshman guard
Jabari Nurse (Randolph, Mass./New Hampton Prep) and grad student forward
Marc Dadika (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saint Mary's Rutherford / FDU) put the Setters on top.
Dadika hit a three of his own to give Pace an 8-3 lead, but Justin Hendrick came back with one from long distance for the Chargers to make it a two-point game.
With the Setters ahead 10-6, New Haven rolled off 10 straight points to take a 16-10 lead with 10:30 remaining in the opening half, capped off by a three from Tyrone Perry.
The Chargers pushed their lead up to nine and were ahead 21-15, but three free throws by senior guard
Brandon Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush / FDU) made it a 24-18 game with seven minutes left. Two more threes by Perry, who started the night 5-of-7 from deep, gave New Haven their nine-point lead back at 30-21.
Perry hit two more threes, including one in the final minute, to up his total to 24 points as New Haven took a 43-29 lead into the half.
Coming out of the break, the Chargers kept up their hot shooting. New Haven went on an 8-2 run to start out the second half before a three by senior forward
Bryan Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Canterbury School) ended the stretch.
The Chargers' Davontrey Thomas hit a pair of shots from beyond the arc, extending the lead to 59-40 in favor of New Haven. Thomas and Perry continued their lights-out shooting, both hitting another three and pushing the lead up to 25.
Two more threes eventually made it a 28-point game, as the Chargers had one of their best nights of the season offensively. New Haven proved too much for the Setters, picking up an 83-57 win to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
