PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- Pace University men's basketball team snagged another home victory on Wednesday night with a 77-72 win over Adelphi University. The Setters' were led by senior guard
Brandon Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush / FDU) who scored 24 points, 17-for-18 from the foul line. Prior to tipoff, Powell was presented a game ball for scoring 1,000 career points earlier this year. It was his sixth 20-point performance this season. Joining Powell in double figures was his twin brother
Bryan Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Canterbury School) with 12 points, junior guard
Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass./Tech Boston / Southern Connecticut State) with 11 points and senior forward
Frankyn Batista (Barahona, Dominican Republic/Hyde / AIC) with 10.Â
Grad guard/forward
Adonis Williams (Spring Valley, N.Y./Brooks School / Adelphi) was near double digits with nine. Williams was also honored pregame with a 1,000-point ball. Williams transfered to Pace from Adelphi and averaged 12.5 points, 8.2 rebounds for the Panthers in 2021-22.Â
Batista led the team in rebounding with eight boards.Â
The Setters (17-9, 9-9 in the NE10) scored their last 13 points off of free throws as the two teams combined for 40 buckets at the charity stripe in 60 attempts.Â
The Setters' biggest lead of the game came at 3:42 left as Pace took a 65-53 lead after
Brandon Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush / FDU) was fouled on a fast break layup and he made the bonus basket. The basket came after an Adelphi turnover, stolen away by Powell. Still leading by 12 with 2:54 left, Adelphi (11-16, 5-14 NE10) made a run to make it a five-point game with :16 remaining. The 12-point cushion was just enough to keep Adelphi from taking control of the game and earning the win.Â
Pace's bench outscored the Adelphi reserves 27-15.Â
The Setters led 31-26 at halftime.Â
The leading scorer for Adelphi was Ronnie Silva with 19 points.Â
Pace swept Adelphi this season, winning the Jan. 4 meeting in overtime on the road, 82-79.
Wednesday night's game was the return of the Pride Hoops Night, celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community at Pace and in the surrounding areas. In conjunction with Pride Hoops, Pace welcomed community partners to table around the arena for students and fans. Halftime featured a special drag performance by Miz Jade. The halftime festivities also included a halftime free throw shooting contest between University President Marvin Krislov and head football coach Andy Rondeau. Rondeau edged Krislov, 6-5, resulting in a $2,550 donation to the Pace Cares Fund, donated by President Krislov and Director of Athletics Mark Brown.Â
Up next, the Setters are back on the road with a game at Saint Rose on Saturday, Feb. 18. Tip time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Pace returns home on Tuesday, Feb. 21 for the final regular-season home game. Prior to tipoff, the Pace men's basketball family will honor their senior Setters in a preseason ceremony.Â
