NEW HAVEN, CT – The Pace University men's basketball team took to the court Tuesday evening against the team that knocked the Setters out of the NCAA East Regional last year, the University of New Haven. With that in mind, Pace got revenge from last year's game, taking down the Chargers in dominating fashion, 61-47.
Pace stays perfect, going to 5-0 and 2-0 in the Northeast 10. Pace returns to action on Sunday, hosting Wilmington University (Del.) at Goldstein Fitness Center with tip off slated at 1:30 p.m.
The Blue and Gold's offense found its rhythm early, scoring nine of the first 12 points to establish an early 9-3 lead, and would never trail again. The lead got up to double digits as
Hamdel Mohammed found the nylon to take a 20-9 lead at the halfway mark of the first half. UNH did manage to trim the lead down to a mere one point, 25-24, but Pace responded with six unanswered points to take a 29-24 lead.
The Setters took momentum into the halftime locker room,
Tray Alexander found a cutting
Jaden Kealey, who took the feed and laid it home to send Pace into the break with a 31-24 advantage,
The Setters came out of the locker room in rhythm.
Bryan Powell drilled back to back triples, which was followed up by a Kealey layup to take a 15-point, 39-24 lead. At that stage, the lead would never go below double digits as the defense shut down the Chargers offense.
When it was all said and done, it was a balanced offensive attack for the Setters. Four different players finished with double figures Powell and
Tray Alexander each contributed 13 points while Kealey and
Sean Bresnan added 11 points. Kealey also brought down 11 rebounds for a double-double.
As a team, Pace out-rebounded New Haven by an impressive margin of 38-21 and 12-5 on the offensive glass.
