PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – In this evenings Northeast 10 Field Hockey quarterfinal matchup between the fifth seeded Southern New Hampshire University Penmen and the fourth seeded Pace University Setters, it was defensive battle and both teams needed a hero, and for Pace it was non other than
Krista Dietz who delivered the game winning goal for Pace to escape with a 1-0 victory.
The Setters now await the result of top-seeded Assumption and Franklin Pierce to determine who they will square off with in the semifinals this coming Friday.
Both teams fired off five shots in the first half, but none got past the respective goalies, but that trend would be broken in the third quarter.
Isabella Boertjes took the ball at midfield and brought it up field and sent it into the box and Dietz was right there to sneak the ball past the goalie for the junior's 24
th goal of the season which is tops in the nation.
Dietz had a chance to put the Penmen away by earning a penalty stroke with less than two minutes left and an empty net, a change that the Penmen made with just under five minutes left. Dietz tried to go left but Emma Peeters kept the Penmen in the game with a brilliant diving save to stave off the threat.
The extra attacker would not be enough as the Setter defense alongside
Celeste Pagliaroli stood firm and earned the shutout victory to advance.
Pagliaroli finished with seven saves in her postseason debut.
