BRIDGEPORT, CT – The Pace University volleyball team rose to the occasion this afternoon and knocked off the University of Bridgeport on the road in five sets by scores of 20-25, 25-19, 27-25, 25-23 and 15-10.
Pace improves to 11-6 on the year and returns home on Tuesday to welcome Southern Connecticut State University for a 7 p.m. match at Goldstein Fitness Center.
Faced with an early deficit, the Setters had to get to work in the second set grabbed a slim lead early in the set and it wouldn't be until the closing points that they created the space they needed. Behind kills from
Daniella Abbastante and
Karielys Melendez, Pace took a 22-17 lead and closed the door from there.
In set three, Pace erased a six-point deficit halfway through the set to stay in the set and tie the affair up at 16-16. The teams traded points in the pivotal set, but Abbastante would deliver the final kill to secure the set.
The Knights took set four to force the pivotal final set.
Pace took an 8-4 lead in the fifth and following a
Brielle Jones kill, the Knights called a timeout, but the momentum was already in Pace's favor and there was not much left for Bridgeport to do to counter it as Pace held firm and took the set, and the match, 15-10.
Jones turned in a monster double-double with 16 kills and 24 digs while Melendez supplied 13.
Maggie Ferguson finished with 38 assists from the setter position.
