Football Drops Heartbreaker on Homecoming

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace football team went the distance in front of the homecoming crowd at Northwell Stadium, going to three overtimes against Southern Connecticut State University, 25-23.

Pace falls to 2-6 on the year and will head to Saint Anselm College next Saturday to continue the season.

The game started with a bang. Pace went back to receive the opening kick and Tyreek Smith did not disappoint, taking the opening back 100 yards to the house to give Pace an early 7-0 lead.

The following kickoff also went the Setters way, with the coverage team recovering the kick thanks to a miscue by the Owls to give the Setters prime field position. Pace made the most of the opportunity, with Brandon Sobotker punching the ball in on the ground to take a 14-0 lead.

The Owls got one of the touchdowns back in the first quarter and tied the ballgame up in the third while stalling the Pace offense.

Overtime had everyone in attendance on the edge of their seats. Pace got the ball first and converted a field goal to put the pressure on the Owls to respond. The Owls knocked on the door of the game-winning touchdown, but Pace stood firm and forced a field goal which barely made it through to keep the game going.

The next period has SCSU start with the ball, and they found the endzone, applying the pressure to Pace. Israel Lopez answered the call and kept the Setters in the game, scrambling and finding space and rushing for a 14-yard touchdown. At this stage, both sides had to go for the two-point conversion, but neither could covert.

From here, each team got one play from the two-yard line and one chance to score and eventually, the Owls did off a pass to Tylon Paplio to secure the win.
