PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University volleyball team battled hard for three sets but ultimately fell to the University of New Haven in straight sets Tuesday evening at Goldstein Fitness Center.
With the loss, Pace drops to an overall record of 10-6 and 2-4 in conference matches.
The opening set began with a back-to-back kills by the Chargers, who tacked on two more points to hop out to a 4-0 lead. From there, they built the lead up to 15-10. The Setters were able to get in a rhythm from that point and rattle off five straight points to tie the set up at 15-15 behind a trio of kills from
Karielys Melendez. That would be as close as Pace would get as the Chargers kept the Setters at bay by taking two points for every one point the Setters won, winning the set 25-22.
Set two followed a similar script to set one except UNH never lost control and allowed the Setters back in the set, winning comfortably 25-17.
Pace started strong in the third, hopping out to a 6-2 lead behind kills from Melendez,
Brielle Jones and
Jaiden Binning. The lead grew as large as five at multiple points and the Setters ended up in striking distance of forcing a fourth set, 22-19. The Chargers got within one point behind an error and a kill, 22-12.
Abby Robertson got one point back, but the Chargers would force a 23-23 tie.
Jada Screen provided a kill to get the Setters a set point, but UNH took the final three points to take the match, 25-23.
Melendez finished 11 kills and nine digs while Roberston finished with a season-high six kills.
