Setters Handle Chargers on the Road

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Pace University volleyball team made the trip across the Hudson River for a meeting with the Dominican University Chargers and left with a 3-1 victory by set scores of 25-23, 21-25, 26-24, 25-7.

Pace improves to 10-5 on the year and will return home for its next match, welcoming the University of New Haven to Pleasantville on Tuesday night.

Pace started the first set strong, grabbing the lead early and never giving it up. While the Chargers would tie the set up or come close, Pace would respond to keep the Chargers at bay. When the Setters had their 14-9 lead turned into a 14-14 tie, Pace held firm and rattled off four straight points to take a 20-16 lead, which would be enough to claim the first set. The first set was capped off by a Daniella Abbastante kill.

Set two was a battle the whole way, with neither team gaining a lead greater than two points until the Chargers pulled away late in the set with four unanswered points at 18-18 to take a 22-18 lead and finish off the set with a 25-21 victory.

Set three continued the trend of the teams battling. Pace appeared to be in control from the outset, opening a 13-2 which featured three straight service aces from Annika Blas-Cedeno. With their work cut out for them, the Chargers chipped away and tied the set up at 22-22. However, Jaiden Binning and Karielys Melendez provided back-to-back kills at 24-24 to secure the set in favor of the Blue and Gold.

The fourth set was all Pace. Pace took a 15-2 lead and never looked back to leave Orangeburg with the win.

Yasmeen Muhammad was stellar this afternoon, finishing with 16 kills while hitting .652. Melendez also supplied 16 kills to go along with nine digs.
